I realised these children needed more love and compassion than other children .It broke my heart sometimes to see 5 year old children completely have a melt down and get so violent and aggressive to the point of throwing furniture and chairs in classroom and acting like a scared dog. I understood they were acting out from a place of frustration and anger, confusion, fear. I also learned that behaviours are created because the child is trying to express a need and is often unable to express their need so resort to violence, aggression, anger, hostility.
I have worked with children who had the most most severe behavior issues in both Calgary School board and Vancouver school boards as a student support worker. I was the one who went into the classroom to support these children.I had special training crisis intervention training in Calgary school board and CPI crisis intervention training in Vancouver school board. I was often put in a placement where the child had severe behavioural issues.
My job was to try and work with these children and to be able to build a relationship with them and read their energy so to prevent a meltdown before it happened. These children gave us clues as to how they felt by the tension in their body, agitation, frustration, and providing means of getting thier needs fulfilled.
I now understand these children responded well when they were treated with respect, compassion and love and someone giving them the time to really connect with them and to build a relationship with them.
They are no different from any other child they just needed more attention , love, compassion and a place to be accepted.
Those years were some of the toughest and challenging for me for me , but the most fulfilling.
When working in the Calgary school board i got beaten up and injured by a child and ended up on medical leave for 6 months.I learn some many lessons from working with these children that i am truly grateful for.
